Student to talent permit in France: conditions and salaries
A student to talent permit switch spares you the work authorisation and can open up to four years of stay. Qualified employee, EU Blue Card, business creation, researcher: the conditions and the 2026 salary thresholds.
You are finishing your master's degree and an employer offers you a good salary? The "talent" card may then spare you the work authorisation. It can also open up to four years of stay in one go. A lawyer checks your file in 20 minutes on Avocat20min.fr.
Student to talent permit: what has changed
The student to talent permit switch remains one of the fastest routes after graduation. Since the law of 26 January 2024, the "talent passport" is simply called the "talent" card. A decree of 13 June 2025 then grouped and renamed several of its categories.
The name changes, but the principle stays. It is a multi-year card, issued from the first application, for up to four years. However, each category has its own conditions.
You apply for the student to talent permit switch from France, before your "student" card expires. Our status change guide covers the filing window.
The categories useful to a former student
Not every category targets recent graduates. Here are the ones that serve them most.
| Category | Degree | Threshold or key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified employee | Master's degree or equivalent | €39,582 gross a year, contract of more than three months |
| EU Blue Card | Three-year degree, or five years of experience | €59,373 gross a year, contract of at least six months |
| Project leader, business creation | Master's degree, or five years of experience | Investment of at least €30,000 |
| Project leader, innovative project | No degree needed | Project recognised by a public body |
| Researcher | Master's degree at least | Hosting agreement from an approved body |
These amounts come from service-public, checked on 1 June 2026. A ministerial order sets them, so they may change. Check them on the day you sign the contract.
Qualified employee: the most common route
For a student to talent permit switch, the qualified employee category comes up most often. You need a master's degree, or an equivalent degree. You also need a contract of more than three months and an annual gross salary of at least €39,582.
That threshold no longer follows the minimum wage. Thus the minimum wage rise of 1 June 2026 did not change it. The card lasts as long as the contract, up to four years.
Its great advantage: no work authorisation. So your employer does not have to prove it found nobody else. The labour market test does not apply to you.
The EU Blue Card
The EU Blue Card targets a highly qualified job. It calls for a degree after at least three years of higher education, or five years of experience. The salary must reach €59,373 gross a year, i.e. 1.5 times the reference salary.
The contract must last at least six months. Also, this card makes moving to other EU countries easier. For a recent graduate, however, that threshold remains high.
Business creation or innovative project
Do you want to start a business after your studies? The project leader category offers two routes.
- Business creation: a master's degree, or five years of experience, a real and serious project, and at least €30,000 invested.
- Innovative project: a project recognised by a public body, with no degree condition.
In both cases, you must show resources of at least the annual minimum wage, about €22,404 gross. If your project is more modest, the "entrepreneur / liberal profession" card suits you better. Our article on the student to entrepreneur status change presents it.
Researcher: the natural next step after a PhD
After a master's degree or a PhD, the researcher category covers research or higher education work. It requires a hosting agreement signed by an approved body. That agreement states your status, the purpose and the length of your work.
Then, once your research ends, the "job search or business creation" card remains open. Our article on the job search permit explains its rules.
The file and the cost
The application goes through ANEF in principle. File it before your "student" card expires, within the set window. Attach in particular:
- your passport and your current permit;
- your degree;
- your employment contract or your hosting agreement;
- for a business project, proof of the investment and of the project.
The first card costs €350 since 1 May 2026. That amount combines a €300 tax and a €50 stamp duty.
Finally, your spouse and minor children can obtain a "talent, family" card. That card lets your spouse work.
While the application is examined
A complete file lodged in time entitles you to a certificate of extended processing. It extends the rights of your "student" card. So you stay limited to 964 hours of work a year until the decision. Do not start your job full time before you hold the "talent" card.
Since 4 May 2026, the ministry says these certificates renew automatically on ANEF. Our article on the residence permit receipt explains their effects.
Also, Algerians fall under the Franco-Algerian agreement of 27 December 1968, not the CESEDA "talent" card. Their residence certificates follow other rules. Our article on Algerian nationals presents them.
Student to talent permit or employee card?
If your salary misses the thresholds, the "employee" card remains possible. It then requires a work authorisation applied for by the employer. It lasts only one year at first. Our article on the student to employee status change explains that route.
So before signing, compare both options with your employer. A few thousand euros of salary can change your permit and its length.
When to consult a lawyer
A lawyer checks that your degree, contract and salary match the right category. They also spot clauses that weaken the file, such as a contract that is too short. If you are refused, our article on residence permit refusal sets out the remedies.
An immigration lawyer answers within 20 minutes. The official conditions appear on the service-public talent card page.
